I am a lyric tenor, organist and conductor based in Manchester and spend most of my time in the North-West of
England, although also travel frequently for concerts. I am available for concerts, weddings and
recitals as both a soloist and an accompanist.
Ian Chesworth initially
trained as a physicist at the University of Durham and worked as an engineer
and manager in the semiconductor industry before making music his
full-time profession.
He has been conducting since University when he
founded the choir 'AMDG' and performed works such as the Mozart Requiem,
Pergolesi Stabat Mater and the Victoria Requiem. With a special interest
in voice production he has studied conducting with Paul Spicer, Janet
Lincé, Alan Hazeldine and David Lawrence. An accomplished organist, he
holds the Associateship Diploma of the Royal College of Organists and
has studied with David Sanger, Roger Fisher and Keith Wright. He has
appeared on national TV and Radio as both an organist and conductor and
also arranged and performed a selection of music from Sir Paul
McCartney’s Liverpool Oratorio in the presence of the composer. Ian
conducts a number of choirs in the
Manchester area, including the King Edward Music
Society of Macclesfield (KEMS),
Manchester Philharmonic Choir,
Bolton Chamber Choir
and is also Director of Music at
Eccles Parish Church.
As a singer, he has had a great deal of experience both as a concert
singer and on the stage. Having trained as a postgraduate at the RNCM,
operatic roles have included Spoletta (Tosca), Silvio (Pagliacci),
Melchior (Amahl and the Night Visitors) and Monostatos (The Magic
Flute). On the concert platform, he has performed as the soloist in
Mendelssohn's Elijah, Faure's Requiem and many gala nights. He has taken
part in a number of masterclasses, and received coaching from Sir Thomas
Allen, Adele Leigh and Seth Riggs among others. He sang as the tenor
soloist in the British Premiere Howard Blake's 'The Bear' with the
Northern Sinfonia and in the presence of the composer.
As a teacher, Ian is
happy in both a one-to-one and group / workshop situations, and is
always happy to give advice to prospective students. He is a visiting
Vocal Coach to the Bristol Academy of the Performing Arts (BAPA),
and is able to offer
tuition in vocal technique, piano, organ and also coaching for advanced
students at his private teaching practice in Chorlton.
